Rick Hindman

SM # 4

Hometown: Vancouver WA

Age: 60

Family: Two children Amy & Brenda

Occupation: Retired Local 290 Pipe Fitter

My older brother Harry, my Twin Brother Bernie and I started racing go-karts at the Jantzen Beach race track in 1963. In 1966 I went in with my brothers Harry and Bernie to form the Hindman Brothers Racing team. Our first car was a 1956 Oldsmobile and we raced it at the Jantzen Beach Quarter mile and the Portland Speedway as a Super Stock Car. I was 20 years old. The next year I bought Jim Patterson's 1956 Chevrolet hardtop and raced it in the Super Stock Car class. Bernie bought Jack Knights 1957 Chevrolet, and my brother raced a 1956 Jalopy that year. In 1982 I joined SCCA, and bought a Red Devil F440 and raced that at PIR. I was very fortunate to win the Oregon Region Championship in that class that year. I went to the Pacific Coast Run offs at Sears Point and got a second place there overall. It was the most fun race I ever ran. I started at the back of the pack and in 16 laps I passed 14 cars. The Oregon Region saw fit to give me the Honor of Novice Driver of the year for 1982. I won the F440 championship again in 1983 and raced the car until 1985. In 1988 I bought a Titan Mk6 and raced that in Club Ford followed by a RF81 Van Diemen club Ford with mixed success. My brother Bernie and I got acquainted with Frank Pool in the late eighties and crewed for him on his Trans Am Corvette. I also crewed for Bernie on his Limited Stock Car when he raced it. When I retired from my Steam Fitters Local 290 in 2003 I started looking for somthing to get back into racing again, and after working for Eric Purcell at EFM with the Van Dieman RFS-22, and getting acquainted with Gary Bockman and Pat McPhall at FMR, I finally settled on the Spec Miata. I am a much older and slower than I used to be, but I am having a lot of fun with racing again which is what it is all about for me. Thanks to Norton Gaston, Pat McPhall, Gary Bockman, and Will Schrader for all of the help they have given me to learn the Spec Miata class.

How long I've been racing: off and on since I was 16

Favorite driver: Frank Pool

What I like best about racing miatas: This class remined me of the old production class cars that that I watched and dreamed of racing when I was in High School. I really enjoy the tight compitition and the people involved with this class. They have been so friendly and helpful.

Crew: My Twin Brother Bernie
